Choice filling tool

Paste your AIR. Get an ordered list of realistic college + branch picks across Safe / Moderate / Aspirational tiers.

How to use this: JoSAA wants your choices in preference order. Standard strategy is aspirational picks first (highest dream choices), then moderate, then safe at the bottom as fallback. Don't drop safe picks entirely — sometimes top-of-list aspirational results in no allotment, and your safe picks become the difference between getting a seat and going to CSAB.

Freeze / Float / Slide explainer

Walk through a real scenario. See exactly what each action does — and what it costs you — before Round 2 locks.

Scenario

Round 1 just allotted you NIT Trichy – Electronics & Communication. Your original choice list looked like:

  1. #1 IIT Bombay – Computer Science
  2. #2 IIT Madras – Computer Science
  3. #5 NIT Trichy – Computer Science
  4. #7 NIT Trichy – Electronics & Communication← allotted
  5. #12 NIT Surathkal – Electrical

Now you have 3 actions before Round 2 starts:

Default recommendation: if you're unsure, pick Float. It can only improve, never demote. The only reason NOT to float is if you're done shopping and want certainty (Freeze), or if you're loyal to the institute but want a different branch (Slide).

    Registration

    Register on JoSAA portal once results are out. One application covers all NIT/IIIT/IIT/GFTI seats.

  2. 02 / Step

    Choice filling

    List college + branch combinations in order of preference. Order is final once locked.

  3. 03 / Step

    Mock allotment

    JoSAA runs a trial allotment so you can adjust choices before final round.

  4. 04 / Step

    Round 1-6

    Six rounds of seat allotment. Each round you can freeze, slide, or float your seat.

  5. 05 / Step

    Reporting

    Confirm seat at allotted institute or report at reporting centre with documents.

  6. 06 / Step

    CSAB special

    For NITs/IIITs/GFTIs only — handles vacant seats after JoSAA rounds end.
